Deep diving and the lessons of a pandemic

Image grabbed from https://www.simpleltc.com/texas-mco-transition-3-important-things-we-learned-in-week-1/

This is a piece I wrote for an application for a certain program. I was restricted to 500 words. Funny how much harder it is to say less when you are restricted. Much apropos for #pandemicfeels.

I don’t swim but was lucky to work on a project rehabilitating coral reefs in a Haiyan-affected coastal town in the Philippines. As monitoring lead, I had the opportunity to spot-check the area with a marine biologist. I was a bit scared but was actually more excited at the thought of diving into unfamiliar territory.

Covid-19 cases have hit 5.4 million today, with 340,000 deaths. Yes, the number of those who have recovered is much higher at two million, but even one death is reason enough to mourn. People are not simply numbers, even in death. They were somebody’s family, loved ones, and friends. And I can’t understand the nonchalance of government leaders when they try to joke or speak lightly of the pandemic that has placed the world in the greatest disruption that many of us couldn’t have imagined possible.

But I would like to be able to look and put out a bit of positivity despite the global doom and gloom scenario. Veganism is not about… (1)

Image result for veganism is not about

This is an expansion of a small part of the 1st Vision: Vegan World Learning Call: Veganism 101 I did today. I sincerely apologize to those who were not able to make it because of technical difficulties. I did not receive any notifications until after the call ended. And I am still receiving notifications to join the meeting until now. Actually, the learning call went really well and even extended a little beyond 5:30 Philippine time.

That first learning call was simply an introduction, an overview for newbies and the vegan-curious. There will be many other topics to explore, and I am hoping to conduct these calls every other month and will be inviting guest speakers to share their line of expertise related to veganism. Looking forward to doing the next one in March 2020 and seeing you there!
