Birthing the Balagon Cultural Creatives 1

I haven’t had a real weekend in months and my body was aching for a break reminding me of it through a fever that burned through Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning.

But the weekend was pregnant with possibilities. My little family trooped to Guimaras Island for ‘The Journey of an Artist’, a small gathering of Iloilo artists and creatives. Jagat Rubio and I co-facilitated the event co-organized by Tintin Buenavista, Marz Capanang, Mumu Dalisay and Arjun Marapon. There were 18 of us, including Balay na Bato host couple Mahesh and Mayin Alejo.

Tiny green island love

I’m generating renewable energy! No, actually, I was giving in to the orders of the photog.   Taken by my soul brother, prize-winning photographer Haresh Tanodra.

I love this tiny green island sorrounded by the sea! That’s all I can say about Guimaras Island in Western Visayas, Philippines. It’s only a stone’s throw away from where I live, an hour away in fact, and another 20 minutes by boat. So my little family visited again after Christmas, and stayed at our friend’s Vegetarian Bed and Breakfast place called ‘Balay Bato’. We had collective meditation after a glorious kiirtan. Then we binged on their lovely indigenous vegan dishes and watched Play for Change videos. The kids played their Magic Cards and goofed around with the cat and dog who we befriended on our last visit.

Biking on a budget

At Ortis Jordan Port, Guimaras Island, a twenty-minute boat ride from Iloilo City.

I always think it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to enjoy what life has to offer. One can enjoy life simply, without the need for so much money or material things.

Our little family loves to go biking. And today, a holiday due to the birthday of Philippine National Hero Andres Bonifacio, is a perfect day to go biking to Guimaras, a neighboring island.  Continue reading
